We’ve been learning about keystone species and why they’re so awesome. Today the kids planted two baby oak trees in the habitat garden they’ve been working on.

Today we harvested herbs for drying, picked flower

Today we harvested herbs for drying, picked flowers for friends and family and stuffed our faces with cherries. We also learned about walnut trees and how they can teach us about boundaries.

P.S. If you want to do you pick cherries this year they’re early so go get them. Like… right now. This hot weather is making them ripen fast! We hit up @farmhauscider last night and they are 👌👌

Farm school June.

Today was the first day our older group started learning how to make a fire with flint and steel. The kids were all VERY confident at first that they would get fires going no problem. They got a quick dose of reality when they realized how tricky it can be! After 45 minutes, a lot of sore hands and persistence, the first tiny flame appeared. Everyone cheered and soon the rest of the kids figured it out. Pretty cool what kids are capable of when they put their minds to it.

We also planted beans and learned about milkweed and hung out with some caterpillars. A good day.

Top tip: if you want to really show off the cool pond critters put them in a shallow clear tray with white paper taped to the bottom. Makes it really easy to see all the little creatures.

🌱We’re offering a limited number of garden installations. The best part? Each garden sponsors one kid attending Farm School for the year. We think all kids deserve a chance to learn how to grow their own food and this is a way we can help make that possible.

Here’s how it will work:
🌱We’ll come chat with you about your garden space and help you pick out plants that will grow well in your conditions and attract the birds or butterflies you want to see.
🌱Then we’ll come plant it for you! You can help as much or as little as you want to with this part.

Garden sizes:
🌱Full garden $160 (think landscaping in front of house) This sponsors one kid attending Farm School for a year. Includes 20 native plants.
🌱Small garden $60 (Smaller than the full garden) This sponsors one kid attending Critter camp, our preschool program. Includes 5 native plants.

First day of Farm School!

We learned all about Zhingwaak, or White pine trees today. We made pine needle tea, planted trees, and one kid even used the sap as a bandaid.

Guess who woke up just in time for the start of Farm School? Hagrid, our ponds little snapping turtle!

Hagrid came crawling out of the mud while we were having our Farm School family campfire night. Guess he didn’t want to miss the party. The kids were VERY excited to see him and it was so cool to check out where he overwintered. He crawled out with about two inches of mud on his shell!

Hagrid was found in the middle of a parking lot when he was the size of a quarter by my dad. We thought he was a goner, he was so dried out and not moving. But, the kids had faith and plunked him in some water and here he is, two years later.

Our science focus this year is Michigan trees and I’m quite excited about it.

If you have an elementary aged kiddo who wants to learn how to grow their own food, dig into some cool environmental science and plant trees, we’ve got you covered. Info and signups are on our website and I’m happy to answer any questions.

This weekend we had a few returning kids over to prep their rows and plant seeds. My favorite part of farm school is asking kids what they want to grow. It’s so fun hearing their answers. One kiddo was a little concerned when we started cucumber seeds. “But I want to grow pickles!” Don’t worry, we’ll have pickles 🤣

And yes, @benjamin_reese made a kids sized broadfork because he’s awesome.

Farm school is for elementary and middle school kids and runs two Wednesdays a month from May-September. Kids learn how to grow their own food, find and cook wild edibles and take care of our planet. Frogs will be caught. Art will be made. Kids will get very muddy. We also eat a few s’mores.

This year’s science focus is trees. We’ll be learning about trees that are native to Michigan. We may have a Bob Ross happily little tree themed day. 🌳🌲🌳

Want to start a garden but don’t know where to start? Want to support kids going to farm school? Just want to eat scones? Great! We’ve got you covered.

This workshop is going to get you ready to start your own garden, or switch an existing garden to no-till. We’ll learn about French kitchen gardens and how to make a garden that’s wonderful to spend time in as well as productive. We’ll draw up garden plans and talk seed starting and play with watercolors. There will be tea. There will be scones. There will be interruptions from kids so feel free to bring your own.

We learned last year that giving away multiple scholarships without any fundraising was… not the best business plan. Shocking 😅 So this is our way of inviting you to support kids going to farm school while also treating you to a fancy brunch and lots of nerdy gardening tips.

FARM SCHOOL UPDATE Here’s what’s growing on

FARM SCHOOL UPDATE

Here’s what’s growing on this upcoming year! I know terrible pun but I had to.

🌿Farmschool- 2 Wednesdays a month May-September for kids 7-12. This is our main focus, working with a small group of kids over a whole growing season. Each kid gets to pick out their own vegetable or flower to grow and manage one of the rows. We’ll also dig into some fun environmental science and learn from other awesome community members. There will be s’mores.

🌱Critter camp - New this year and just for our preschool buddies. We’ll have 1-2 week long day camps for kiddos 4-6 to learn about some of the awesome critters we can help protect, even when we’re kids! We’ll be planting native wildflowers, catching tadpoles, and getting really muddy.

🌲Teen program? Maybe? If there’s enough interest I’d love to do a teen program focusing on small scale environmental conservation. So if you know any teens who want to hangout in vernal pools or plant milkweed let me know.

Signup for the programs will be open in March, first for returning kiddos and then for the rest of y’all. If you have any questions, or need any more bad farming puns let me know!

It’s that time again! Time for Beaversfarm pancake stack contest.

The rules:
🥞 Make pancakes. Stack em’ up. Hold a ruler next to the stack and take a picture. Post the picture and tag us or send it to me. Eat the pancakes.

🥞 Pancakes must stack on their own, so no toothpicks or holding them up for the picture.

The Pancake Point system:

🥞One point per inch of pancake stack.
🥞Bonus point for style up to 2 points.
🥞Bonus points for creativity up to 2 points.
🥞Bonus point if your pancake picture makes me laugh.

The Prize:
🥞 One bottle of Mr. Beavers maple syrup.
🥞Bragging rights
🥞 Getting to eat a stack of pancakes

Winner will be announced on March 1st. Prize for local west Michigan folks only unless you want to drive really far to pick up a bottle of syrup.

It looks like Narnia now but we’re gearing up for the growing season. There’s garlic under all that snow… somewhere.

Farm-school 2024 is going to be super. Kids. Veggies. Tadpoles. S’mores. Baby broadfork.

That’s a wrap!
Farm school 2023 is over. All that’s left to do is eat squash and potatoes all fall.

So dang fun to see these kids harvest the plants they started from seed way back in May.

We had one kid grow so much squash he needed a wagon to get them home. He’s planning on sharing them with his grandparents. So. Flipping. Wholesome.

So proud of all these kiddos for getting dirty and working hard and eating lots of marshmallows. Good job little farmers!
